Missions
Since 1975 the 106th Rescue Wing has been the premier search and rescue organization in the Northeastern United States. The Wing is officially credited with 610 rescues. Today, the family and friends of those people that were rescued can send thanks to the men and women of the 106th. The Wing has also participated in 97 Space Shuttle missions earning it the nickname, Space Shuttle Rescue Team.
Not all of the missions have been successful. And not all of the missions have taken place in the Northeastern US. 106th Rescue Wing personnel have participated in search and rescue missions in Iraq. They participated in the rescue of scores of people following the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. These crews operate throughout the world.
In the mission links here we have attempted to highlight those search and rescue missions that have been extensively covered by the media and to provide a complete history of the missions since 1975. We are always seeking details of the participants in missions, so please drop us a note with names of crew members and the people involved so that they may be recognized by their peers. |
