Bases
The 1st Aero Company and the succeeding organizations that now make up the 106th Rescue Wing, New York Air National Guard, have always called New York State home. Starting out in the 71st Regimental Armory in Manhattan the unit chose to fly on the Hempstead Plains of Nassau County. Following World War I, the unit was located in Miller Field, New Dorp, Staten Island where they spent several decades. During World War II, the unit was moved around the country but returned to New York.
Following World War II they were relocated to Floyd Bennett Field in Canarsie, located in the Borough of Brooklyn until 1974. In 1974-75 the unit was moved to the former Suffolk County Air Force Base in Westhampton Beach, Long Island, where they reside today.
